River Trip Inspiration

I’ll admit: I use my sons as an excuse for turtle hunting. For as long as I can remember, I’ve enjoyed paddling off into river-borne adventure as much as they have – maybe even a bit more at times. (Particularly now that they’re not little boys anymore.)

But the turtles don’t seem to be out this summer. Mosquitoes, on the other hand: rampant. So these photos were the only successful thing about a very trying, bug-infested turtle-hunting trip with my boys a few weeks back:

I’ve always loved water lilies and lotus flowers. So I made the boys stop, pull the motor up, and paddle us into very shallow, very mucky water so I could get these shots. Now, the pictures are a happy memory of one of my favorite flowers and of my 2 beloved (and exceptionally patient, at least in this instance) boys.

To me, nature as art is the best kind of art. Whether you turn it into something functional, like a coffee table or a planter, or use it as something sculptural on its own.

One unnamed member of my family actually jacked one of these root systems from the lakeside and hung it on her apartment wall in Chicago. Yeah, I’m jealous. And proud.
