Where the Buffalo’s Home

Dear friends who can’t help but cry at the ASPCA commercials: please note that this buffalo hailed from a buffalo farm, and his life was not tossed aside for the sake of wall art. His body provided sustenance for many, and in celebration of his happy and life-giving existence, his head now resides on my wall.

Here’s why:

I found him at a shop in northern Michigan, and I adored him instantly. There’s something so sweet about the expression on his fuzzy face. It was love at first sight.

When I found him, I thought that – of course – he would come back to the shop with me and get placed in some incredible location to add major impact to an amazing vignette. But then I returned to our place and opened up the back of my car. And there he was, looking right at me with those big, sweet, brown eyes.

“Hello Buffalo,” I thought. “You’re coming home with me.”

I love the dramatic contrast of his dark self placed on this white background. So often, taxidermy is used in dark rooms or on paneled walls, and this type of installation doesn’t always occur to us as an option. But don’t be afraid of it. The effect is bold and memorable.

I think my furry friend would want it that way.
